Humanitarian Aid Abroad
Sri Lanka 2004 Three doctors, ex-volunteers of our Local Committee currently active at the Local Committee of Varese, have participated to the humanitarian mission in Sri Lanka following the Tsunami of December 24,2004. Dr. Marco Chiaravalli (VdS) and Dr Giuliano Zocchi (VdS) have been sent with the 2nd contingent, and Dr. Isabella Ricotti (VdS) took part of the mission with the third contingent. Each contingent has operated on the island for about thirty days, assisting at the Red Cross field hospital established in Vakarai and in different villages of the surrounding territory. The photos are a tribute to those whom in the tragic natural event have lost most of what little they have had, maintaining though intact an incredible dignity and an enviable ability to appreciate life. An indelible lesson of humanity for those who participated at the mission.

India 1997 Since 1997, medical teams and volunteers of the Varese Red Cross travel to Puri, Orissa state (India), at the mission founded by Father Mariano Zelazek (recently deceased) to bring health and material support but primarily to convey a sense of participation and solidarity to the problem of leprosy. Father Mariano Zelazek, who has lived in India for over 50 years of priestly missionary, among the various charities supported, he founded the house of lepers called "Leprosy Karunalaya" that today welcomes a large number of families that are offered room and board in exchange for their work within the community. But above all, to the lepers and their families is being offered the opportunity to continue to have an identity within the indian social system which rejects and marginalizes people with leprosy. Thanks to our support the Leprosy Karunalaya community has developed many activities such as cultivation, breeding of poultry, "factories" and even a school," Beatrix School" which offers education and livelihood for aprox. 600 of lepers children or however coming from families with significant financial difficulties. Over the years, our local committee has sent doctors and nurses: IP Stefania Ceron (CNF), IP Chiara Da Re (VdS), IP Quamori Laura Tanzi (CNF), IP Cristina Sessa (VdS), IP Clelia Zocca (IV ), Dr. Giuliano Zocchi (VdS - CL Varese).
